| 1.1 Portfolio 26 Desktop as a Service (DaaS) | |
---|
1.1.26 Desktop as a Service: | Microsoft contributed to the world with its "one per desk" mission to bring one computer to each person with Office as the driver. "One per Desk" employed Outlook to "push" emails to one specific personal inbox, to have all your music and photos installed on one computer and to hold critical business documents on a hard disk that could be stolen. | That era is over and now people have many computing devices and will have even more by the end of the decade. "Desktop as a Service" (DaaS) will replace one-per-desk as people need all data, emails, music and photos on every device they are in front of. Each person needs access to exactly the same information to be available on their computer, tablet, smart phone, TV and Fridge. |
Internet: | Mail, photos and music are in the cloud so every device you own or have access to a browser will let you sign in and view all your emails, music, photos and data without anything ever being downloaded. | Just like electricity, you are dependent on an Internet connection, but for the last 50 years computers have been dependent on electricity and that has enabled us to exceed "one per desk". |
Broadband: | We have now tasted the considerable benefits of 80 Mbps Internet connections and it is easy to see that no data will ever need to be locally stored on a device that can be stolen or lost. | It is now very easy to set a strict policy that nothing is permitted to be downloaded to any device. A browser shortcut can be placed on a desktop to any service is only a click away, but no software, emails, music, photos or data can be downloaded and installed on any computer, tablet, smart phone or TV. | We are very good at delivering unique application services for each customer, but we need to have many more reusable web services as the building blocks. |
Desktop as a Service: | 1a. CRM data as a multi-tier address book of commercial strength for all business associates. | 1b. CRM business documents to create and send documents upon demand or as scheduled. | 1c. CRM document archive as a scan and upload service for all business correspondence. | 2. Email (and SMT) to and from those business associates with search indexing and information retrieval. | 3. Calendar diary of events and tasks as a fundamental part of the CRM application service. | 4. Music library as Spotify with private playlists as your own radio station. | 5. Photo library as Flickr with private storyboard as a show. |
Not Provided: | 6. Instant video and audio messaging as Skype - this does not need any downloaded data and so is not a desktop service. | 7. Maps and directions as Google Earth - this does not need any downloaded data and so is not a desktop service. | 8. Office as Google Apps - this become obsolete with a good CRM business documents service. |
Justification: | We can demonstrate a very secure solution where users are in a position to sponsor business focused applications that will help them carry out their business functions and communicate data with others. Many of the tasks that users and managers face each day are data oriented and that is where we can help people to become more productive and efficient. Productivity breakthroughs can happen when people are motivated to improve customer services and make their job easier. It is now practical and realistic for user ideas to become valuable application services without misunderstanding and delays. | Those businesses that deploy user defined application services will become more effective, more productive and more competitive that those to stick with traditional development. |
No Software: | We are told that some countries are selling pirated software worth many millions. It is so simple to stop - stop selling software and provide an application service. It is not possible to steal and sell an application service - stop installing software that will be stolen and corrupted by malware when application services are imune from such criminal behaviour. |
Desktop as a Service: | Using any browser on any device in any location, enter your domain name and sign in to your personal desktop. Simplified shortcut methods involving fixed IP addresses, machine serial numbers and cookies can approve a secure sign in with a few clicks or taps on the screen. | Your welcome page is a mass of tiles or icons - just like a desktop with a mass of shortcut images. Just tap on a tile and that applicable mail, photos, music or data is available without any consideration of where the information is physically located. | When you loose your computer, tablet or smart phone, you do not loose any data, music, photos or emails - all information is always 100% safe and professionally backed up in the cloud. It is impossible for a criminal to target your laptop to steal critical business information because no data is ever downloaded to any of your devices. It is impossible for a virus to attack and steal your data because nothing is permitted to be downloaded to your computer, tablet or smart phone. You can safely use public Wi-Fi connections and use public computers because everything is always safely protected in the cloud. |
Security: | All security problems are resolved with the one simple rule that machines cannot download anything. | It is not possible to be infected with a virus, Trojan or malware when nothing can be downloaded. | Every toolbar and app that is downloaded is an performance overhead that cannot be cost justified and a security risk that must be avoided. |
Corporate Decision: | XP expires in 2014 and most corporations must make a policy decision to either reinvest in obsolete client-server technology or upgrade to cloud based solutions. Existing client-server solutions have proved to be not secure, not able to support "Bring Your Own Device" and demand expensive IT support. Cloud solutions are many times more secure, are able to support "Bring Your Own Device" and avoid the cost of IT support to look after hardware. |
