ITIL 4.7.50 Electric Policy

4.7.50. Electric (energy) Policy:
Minimise costs.
Maximise availability.
Minimise risk from electric shock.
Maximise reliability.
Most 240 volt solutions are replaced with 24 volt solutions.
All 24 volt solutions operate from gel sealed long-life batteries.
All batteries are recharged each day using free solar electricity.
Energy costs tend towards zero in a world where energy costs are escalating.

Electric Policy:
As a natural evolution, the role of high voltage is being replaced with low voltage electric power supplies.   What was once 240 volts will become 24 volts in the near future.
All lighting circuits have evolved from 240 volt 80 watt flourescent tubes to 24 volt 3 watt LED lights and 12 watt LED strips.   This is not just a massive saving in energy costs, its a major improvement to the environment.   Indications are that where 240 volt lighting bulbs had a life of 5000 hours, LED lighting has a lide of 50,000 hours - a massive saving in replacement and maintenance costs.

Capital Costs:
Any electric solution has a capital cost; however a 24 volt solution does not need to cost more than a 240 volt solution.   Where an existing 240 volt solution is replaced with a 24 volt solution, then a one-off capital cost is needed, but low voltage has significant installation benefits.

Automation:
All 24 volt electric solutions are computer controlled by simple relays.   Lighting and temperature are computer controlled from any Internet connected device.

Low Power Solutions:
All computers can be adapted to operate from 24 volts.   All lighting systems can be replaced with 12 volt and 24 volt solutions.   All monitors and TVs can be adapted to operate from 24 volts.   Fridges and freezers can be adapted to operate from 24 volts.
Microwave and kettle will continue to operate from 240 volts.   Air conditioning may be able to be adapted to operate from 24 volts.   Gas heating controls and fans to be adapted to operate from 24 volts.

Battery Packs:
All 24 volt solutions operate from gel battery packs as a pair of 12 volt systems.   Battery packs provide guaranteed supplies - power supply failures have been eliminated.
Batteries are recharged each day using free solar electricity.   The energy cost of all 24 volt solutions is reduced towards zero.   By limiting battery discharge to less than 20% per day, a battery life of 20 years can be achieved.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
3 watt LED lights with a life of 50,000 hours can be justified to be on when people are in close proximity.   To minimise the possibility of SAD, free electricity for solar charged batteries is used to keep lights on when ever a person is close.   Lights are switched on day and night when sensors detect people in the same room.   Daylight bulbs are recommended - they may be simply operated from a timeswitch or control computer.   When energy costs tend towards zero, then free energy can be used for health and welfare purposes.
