2.1.10 Service Catalogue:

The three tier architecture of web, application and database servers is designed to support online services employing the "latin-1" character set.

This ISO 8859-1 character set is known as Windows-1252 and can deliver normal HTML web pages in the following languages:

English, American, German, French, Spanish, Portgeese, Italian, Dutch, Belgian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Swahili, Malay, Indonesian, Icelandic, Finnish, Faroese, Glaician, Catalan, Basque, Afrikaans, Polish, etc..

Our web services and databases are by design, limited to support online services in Western Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, Austo-Asia, North and South America.

Multiple Languages:

Where an application service is to support multiple languages at the same time, then UTF-8 encoding is used.

This is a multibyte character set that is backward compatible with ISO 8859-1 Latin-1 character set and is the dominant encoding method of the Internet.

Up to 4 bytes may be employed to make sure that every character of every language can be properly represented - over 1 million codes are specifified.

European languages can be up to twice the message size as an English web page, so performance will be impacted.

Sort order and search facilities may not work as the user expected when and encoded symbol exists - the definition of upper and lower case or which version of an accented character should come first may be considered to be arbitary, but consistent.
