ITIL 4.7.30 Wilux Operating System Software |
---|
4.7.30. Wilux Operating System Software: | * WILUX will run on any 32 bit or 64 bit Intel or AMD processor. Any desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet or smart phone. | * WILUX needs only 8 GB of hard disk space, so the smallest machine is adequate. Power consumption and electric costs can be minimised. | * WILUX includes all the application software that is likely to be needed. While other software may be installed, this is very unlikely to be needed. | * WILUX does not need anti-virus updates, does not need defragmentation and does not need disk cleanup. IT maintenance costs can be minimised or avoided. | * WILUX looks, feels and acts in a similar way to Windows-XP. WILUX does not act, feel or look like Windows 8.1. | * WILUX Libra Office suite looks, feels and acts in a similar way to Microsoft Office 2003 with a traditional menu. WILUX Libra Office does not act, feel or look like Microsoft Office 2013 with its ribbon menu. | * WILUX hard disk is fully encrypted - it is safe and secure. WILUX can be booted from a USB stick so hardware issues are very easy to deal with. |
Open Source: | Open source is the new CV - people who contribute to open source projects get jobs based on proven evidence. When a vendor (or agent) is looking for new people to hire - open source contributors are the first place they will look. While others wait for a job to be advertised, open source contributors get invited to meetings a long time before any jobs are advertised. |
Operating System Software: | The operating system software on any computing device is of little consequence because all application services are in the cloud. Smart mobile phones paved the way where each vendor had their own unique operating system software but it made little difference to people using a phone. Computing devices have followed where that actual operating system software on any desktop, laptop, netbook, tablet, smart phone or smart TV is of little consequence. | The ASP chooses to use WILUX as a proven stable edition of LINUX-MINT with a number of open software programs added to provide the few installed services that are needed. As a professional secure environment, the entire hard disk is encrypted. |
Bootable USB Stick: | WILUX is installed on a 4GB USB stick - plug it into any computer and boot from the USB port to bring up the operating system software. WILUX may be operated from the USB stick without any other work or it may be instaled on the local hard drive in addition to whatever operating system software was installed, or as a replacement. | WILUX is very suited to low-powered Windows-XP machines that have been refurbished - they can be very economical to operate. |
Cost Effective: | WILUX is free of charge - licensed open source software. Maintenance has been reduced to a simple comprehensive upgrade every 6 to 12 months - if this is needed and cost effective. | Periodic defragmentation and disk cleanup are avoided. Anti-virus scans and updates are avoided. No extra or special software needs to be installed or maintained - this can be a significant cost reduction. |
Observation: | Microsoft released more than 80 kernel-level patches in 2013 - security backdoors. Wilux had 2 upgrade releases in 2013, but neither was to patch a security vulnerability. | Security Rule: Where private and confidential business data and intelectual property is involved, Wilux must replace Windows software. |
Always On: | WILUX tends to be upgraded every 6 to 12 months but stability is its core strength and it does not need to be upgraded for many years on end. Continual operations (24*7) is the default working condition where it is critical to avoid the need to restart the machine, to defragment the disk or clean up unused files - an avoid the need for anti-virus software to be running. The encrypted hard disk ensures that if a machine is stolen, encrypted data is secure and cannot be reused or sold. | WILUX needs about 8 GB of disk space so a machine with a small 40 GB hard disk can be very effective. All photos and music can be stored in the cloud and accessed by a browser application service. |
Edition 17: | WILUX edition 17 licenses the following open system (free) software: | * Firefox Browser | * Chrome Browser - gMail | * Thunderbird Email | * Pidgin Messenger (skype) | * Libra Office Draw | * Libra Office Base (access) | * Libra Office Impress (powerpoint) | * Libra Office Calc (excel) | * Libra Office Writer (word) | * Dictionary | * Movie Player | * VLC Video Player | * Banshee radio and online music | * Brasero CD/DVD Writer | * Sound Recorder | * Torrent client | * Calculator | * ScreenShot | * Pluma text editor | * Tomboy Notes | * GIMP Image Editor | * Simple Scanner | * gThumb Photo Gallery |
